Shipping alerted as 80-tonne wave generator falls into the sea

East Power Generator

An 80-tonne wave power generator was towed to safety after falling into the sea when a pontoon taking it to an offshore trial capsized. The generator, pictured being lowered on to the pontoon, was to have been placed five miles off Southwold, Suffolk, for a year-long evaluation that may lead to wave farms capable of powering 60,000 homes.

Coastguards alerted local shipping as the 18m (59ft) machine drifted with the tide until tugs could secure lines and take it to nearby Dunwich Bay. It is not known if the machine was badly damaged or will be salvagable.
