FIVE CREW members have been seized from a Lithuanian reefer ship off Nigeria, Lithuania’s foreign ministry confirmed to Fairplay today.
Armed men attacked the 3,900dwt Saturnas in a speedboat and kidnapped five seafarers, leaving another nine behind.
A ministry representative told Fairplay that the foreign minister had met the owner of the vessel in the port of Klaipeda to discuss the incident.
Displomatic moves are under way seeking to secure the release of the seafarers, the ministry added.
The rebel group MEND has been responsible for a string of attacks against the country’s oil industry, including high-profile raids against tankers and offshore vessels. But the group agreed a one-month cease-fire last month.
Saturnas belongs to Limarko Shipping.
